Purcell, OK

Gene Autry Donaho died February 21, 2026, in Purcell, at the age of 88 years 4 months. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 PM, Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the Hopping Cemetery in Wayne, entrusted to the care of Wadley’s Funeral Service.

Gene was born October 21, 1937, in Purcell, Oklahoma to William “Bill” Rufus and Dovie Lee (McBay) Donaho. Raised and attending school in the small community of Wayne, Oklahoma, Gene's early years shaped him into a man of integrity and passion. In 1956, Gene answered the call of duty by enlisting in the United States Navy, serving with pride until his honorable discharge in 1957. His commitment to his country reflected the values instilled in him from a young age. In 1959, he wed Sharon Strickland in Gainesville, Texas; their paths eventually separated in 1963, yet they remained friends. Gene's life's journey took a beautiful turn on April 21, 1979, when he married Norma Ruth Abston, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Their union flourished for 36 cherished years until Norma's passing in 2015, leaving behind treasured memories of their life together. A respected figure in his professional life, Gene devoted many years to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, where he worked diligently, rising through the ranks to retire as a Captain in 1999. His contributions to the field were significant, reflecting his strong work ethic and commitment to bettering the lives of others. Also, over the years, Gene spent many hours in the cab of a truck hauling things cross country.  Beyond his professional achievements, Gene found joy in life's simple pleasures—gardening, fishing, steer roping, camping, and RVing, all brought him immense happiness. He was known for his kindness, easily striking up conversation with anyone he met, and his love for sharing stories over a cup of coffee became legendary among friends and family, as well as other patrons of local cafes like Sonny's and All In Diner, and other cafes over the years.  Gene was a man with an enduring spirit who touched the lives of many, whose laughter echoed in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of kindness, camaraderie, and unwavering dedication will forever inspire those who carry his memory forward.
