Jōh Gainey

     Jōh Gainey neé Capshaw passed away on March 29, 2026, near Sulphur, OK, where she resided for the last 25 years. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the Wadley’s Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow, beside her Husband, at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell, OK, entrusted to the care of Wadley’s Funeral Service.

     Jōh was born March 20, 1933, to George Russell and Sarah Francis Capshaw neé Stone just west of Byars, OK. She spent her early life near Rosedale, OK, before moving to Oklahoma City at age 9. There, Jōh continued her schooling, except for her 9th grade year spent in Guthrie, OK. After graduating from Capitol Hill High School in 1951, Jōh moved to Santa Barbara, CA, and attended Santa Barbara Business College until early March 1952. Following that, Jōh moved to Jacksonville, FL. with her mother, to help care for Jōh's niece while Jōh's sister was hospitalized for tuberculosis treatment. Jōh married Herbert Gainey on March 20, 1953. Over the next 5 years, they had 4 children and moved the family to the community of Mandarin, FL, where they resided as they raised their family for the next 19 years. They relocated to Oklahoma in 1979, establishing a new home near Ratliff City, one filled at all times with love and laughter. In March of 1962, Jōh became a member of the Baha'i' Faith, remaining an active member for the rest of her life. As part of her lifelong faith, Jōh accomplished many things, including being one of the first Baha'i' Assembly members of Duval County, FL.; representing Baha'i's at the U.N. Organization in Jacksonville, FL; being appointed Assistant Board member twice in Oklahoma; serving on the Oklahoma Teaching Committee; and as a member of the Oklahoma Baha'i' School Committee. Her contributions over the years will be greatly treasured by all who knew her. A lover of poetry and a voracious reader of all literature, Jōh's true passion was American History. Her library remains full of diverse authors, covering all aspects of the founding and creation of the American democratic republic. Always full of life and love for her family and friends, Jōh hosted, even until the end, many a family get-together, such as the annual Christmas party where family would come from near and far to gather for good food and lots of fun and laughter.

     Jōh Gainey was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, as well as her 6 older siblings: Jōh's brothers, Charles Bales Capshaw, Clem Calvin Capshaw, William Perry “Smokie” Capshaw, Jarrett Durwood Capshaw, Louie Edward Capshaw, and her sister, Sybil Wiley neé Capshaw. Jōh was also preceded by her oldest son, David Edward Gainey, and grandson, Jason Dean Clary. Jōh is survived by David’s wife, Susan Ann Gainey neé Barnett, her daughter Julie Rene Gainey, Robin Russell Gainey and his wife Rosita neé Maldonado and Stanley Keith Gainey and wife Karen neé Adair. Her memory endures through her grandchildren: Tammi Jōh Clary, Ryan Louie Gainey, Michael Keith Gainey, Christina Dawn Gainey, Christopher Walter Gainey, Robert Nikolaus Gainey and Tristan Herbert Gainey. Jōh's legacy will continue long into the future through her great-grandchildren: Adam, Anna, Conor, Ayla, Everly, and Andrew, and through her many loving nieces and nephews.
