Maria del Carmen Perez de Suarez died January 7, 2026, in Norman, Oklahoma at the age of 88 years 10 months 4 days. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 AM, Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Norman, entrusted to the care of Wadley’s Funeral Service.

Maria del Carmen was born March 12, 1937, in the vibrant community of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, to Ramon Perez and Carmen Orduno. From her formative years, she exhibited an unwavering dedication to her roots, assisting her father with the ranch's cattle and fowl—a labor of love that instilled in her a profound sense of pride. As a single mother of five, Carmen exemplified resilience and strength. Her children were fortunate to have her as a steadfast guide, and her unwavering independence served as a beacon of inspiration. With a relentless spirit, she taught herself to drive through determination and tenacity, ultimately ascending to the role of supervisor in her professional life. While residing in Naco, Arizona, she courageously embraced innovation, becoming one of the very first residents to explore the possibilities of solar power. Carmen treasured her independence, often sharing her sentiment that “In your house, you are the queen, and no one can tell you what to do.” This fierce autonomy was woven into the fabric of her character, which was marked by a refreshing straightforwardness—if you sought her counsel, you could expect an honest answer, devoid of embellishment. Her culinary talents were legendary; she cooked with lard, insisting that no oil could rival her recipes. Carmen was renowned for her tamales, menudo, tacos, and flour tortillas, which many would declare the finest in the world. Beyond the kitchen, she poured her creativity into craft projects and sewing, nurturing a love for all creatures great and small. Her affection extended to the animals she cared for, which included dogs, cats, chickens, geese, and wild birds. It was not uncommon for her to name her chickens in honor of her cherished daughters-in-law. A true treasure hunter, Carmen delighted in rummaging through yard sales, where she found her beloved dog named Bonita for a mere $100.00. Her unwavering faith was anchored in her devotion to the Virgen de Guadalupe and San Martin de Porres, as she actively participated in the community at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Carmen would often impart her blessings with the kind words, “Que Dios Te Cuide y Bendiga” - “May the Lord bless you and watch over you.”

Maria is preceded in death by her parents, Ramon Perez and Carmen Orduno; her husband, Raul Suarez; and all of her siblings. Survivors include her children, Jesus R. Suarez, Carlos M. Suarez, Ramon A. Suarez, Perla C. Gonzalez, Christina I. Castillo; her 12 grandchildren; her 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.
