Bill was born June 13, 1934 in Enid, Oklahoma to Charles Howard and Wilma Audrey (Bashaw) Shore. He was raised in Enid, Oklahoma, graduating in 1952, and then continued his education at Phillips University earning his Bachelors in Geology. Bill was inducted into the United States Army in 1956. During his service, he was stationed in Brussels, where the 1958 World’s Fair was hosted. There he met Sarah Alice Cowart, who was a hostess in the America’s pavilion. Bill was honorably discharged in 1959. On May 30, 1960, he married Sarah Alice Cowart in Reform, Alabama. They made their home briefly in Norman, Oklahoma, where they both pursued their higher education. Bill earned his Master’s in Criminal Justice from the University of Oklahoma. Bill and Alice have made Lexington their home, for the last 60 years, after they purchased their current home. Bill began working for the Department of Corrections at the Lexington Assessment and Receiving Center in 1978, and retired in 2000 as the Facility Classification Manager. Along the way, Bill and Alice had four children, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bill enjoyed many things in his life including a love of the outdoors, and everything that meant. He enjoyed woodworking, restoring old steam trunks, gardening, vacations on the beach, and above all else, family. He stressed the importance of not only his immediate family, but his extended family as well. His children are now aware of family members all over our great country, from both Bill and Alice’s sides. The other thing the Bill held dear was a love of and belief in, our United States of America. His patriotism was reflected in his service to his country, as well as in every aspect of his later life. Bill truly believed that it was an honor to be an American. He believed that privilege was never free, and could only be maintained through personal sacrifice. His life was governed by those beliefs, and by a strict personal code. Everything he ever put his hand to, was done with the understanding, that he would only give his very best effort. He would always be honest, respectful, and that every action or word should be tempered by honor, integrity, and most of all, love. His code could be boiled down to a few concepts, such as “don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t cheat,” and “the golden rule.” As a result, he provided a standard for future generations to strive for, both in his personal and professional lives. Bill was truly one of the good ones, and he will be missed.
